Årets prisutdeling er flyttet fra Los Angeles til New York, og finner sted 13. september. Det er Lady Gaga og Beyoncé som topper listen over flest nominasjoner med hele ni hver. Det betyr at de to troner over fjorårets store comeback-dronning Britney Spears som «bare» må ta til takke med sju nominasjoner for sin «Womanizer».

Et artig poeng er at Eminem og Kanye West står mot hverandre med fire nominasjoner i de samme kategoriene. Også i år er det den britiske komikeren Russel Brand som leder MTV Video Music Awards, og kanalen melder at Taylor Swift, Pink, Green Day og Muse er blant artistene som skal opptre under showet.
