Det er 22. året Independent Spirit Awards deles ut, og kriteriene for prisen er basert på originale, provokative emner og grad av selvfinansiering.
Prisen er den mer kunstneriske versjonen av Oscar prisen i USA. Både Little Miss Sunshine og Half Nelson fikk fem nominasjoner hver, blant annet for beste regissør. Prisen deles ut 24. februar, som er dagen før Oscar utdelingen.
Det er vanligvis noe overlapping av de nominerte for de to prisene, men det er sjelden prisene blir tildelt samme vinner.
Men under fjorårets Independent Spirit Awards ble lavbudsjetts-filmer som Brokeback Mountain og Crash også anerkjent ved Oscar seremonien.
Little Miss Sunshine omhandler en familie som reiser landet rundt for å se sin datter delta i skjønnhetskonkurranser. Michael Arndt ble nominert for sin debut som manusforfatter, og to av skuespillerne, Alan Arkin og Paul Dano, kjemper mot hverandre om tittelen som beste birolle.
